Artifacts recovered from the Birkenhead.

[area photos - south africa] [paintings] [birkenhead brewery]

[birkenhead 150 - south africa] [salvage operations] [artifacts]

Some artifacts from the wreck of the Birkenhead, on display in the lighthouse at Danger Point.

The Birkenhead Cannon, outside the
Strandveld Museum, near Gansbaai.

Front and side view of a small medicine bottle, sealed with a glass stopper

A draw handle, medicine bottle and
brass (tongue) of a bell

A revolving 'Allport pistol' made of silver. As can be seen from the photo the iron revolving barrels and trigger have long corroded away. Incredible however is the fact that the wooden (organic) handles survived in mint condition - a unique find.

An "oil-burning gimbal-mounted lamp" that can swivel in two directions to avoid spilling the oil when the boat rolls.

Organic material "never survives" hundreds of years of submersion. This makes these remains of a ladies petticoat a unique artifact.
